You’re Majoring In What? Strange College Degrees and Programs

CAN’T DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT to major in? There is nothing wrong with that—you have two years at college and lots of information you can read at justcollegeguide.com before you need to make a final decision.

Here are some fascinating college majors from American universities that you’ve probably never heard of—and the cool jobs they can lead to:

At the University of Wisconsin-Stout for example a Bachelor of Science degree in packaging might be at the top of your list. A survey of the class of 2009 found that 90 percent were working in a field related to packaging within just months of graduation!

If you’re a golf nut but aren’t able to turn pro maybe you should consider running your own golf course. A degree in professional golf management from Penn State University will teach you how to do just that with courses in Analysis of the Swing and Golf Car Fleet Management. And perfecting your swing is part of the program: students must pass a golfing proficiency test out on the course before being awarded with a diploma and a membership in the PGA.

Are you hoping to prove that aliens exist? The University of Glamorgan in the United Kingdom offers degrees in astrobiology (the study of life on other planets and throughout the universe). If you’d prefer someplace closer to home Arizona State University now allows students to pursue a B.S. in Earth & Space Exploration with a concentration on astrobiology.

Not interested in finding aliens? How about treasure? Imagine being the first to find a historic shipwreck prehistoric village or even an old lighthouse! There are several schools offering nautical/marine archaeology majors but the University of West Florida’s program includes shipwreck archaeology with research as far as Mexico!

If you’d rather think outside the box than underwater or in space the University of Connecticut offers B.F.A. M.F.A. and M.A. degrees in puppet arts. You might chuckle at the thought of someone majoring in puppetry but they’ll be laughing all the way to the bank. Many graduates end up on stage while some puppetry program alumni go on to write books design toys teach children direct top museums and schools design puppets for theaters around the world and work for well-known TV programs.

Don’t be quick to judge the bakery science major at Hesston College or Kansas State University. There’s no time for students to stand around and lick the beaters with courses in microbiology management and macroeconomics.

So what’s the right major for you? Comic strip art? Winemaking? Bowling alley management? No need to decide while you’re in high school. Just pretend you’re majoring in ecogastronomy (the study of food’s path from the ground to your stomach) . . . and take some time to digest it!
